What is the Abortion Pill?

The “Abortion Pill” is a series of pills. Also known as medication or chemical abortion. Medication abortion consists of two different powerful drugs – Mifepristone and Misoprostol.

The first pill (mifepristone) blocks the progesterone needed to sustain the life of the embryo. The second set of pills are (misoprostol), taken 24 hours later. The Abortion Pill induces labour, and causes the shedding of your endometrium to end your pregnancy through the vagina. This can take hours or as long as two weeks.

Is the Abortion Pill safe?

Although the Abortion Pill is marketed as a safe option, it may carry serious risks, especially if taken at home and without medical assistance.
A lot of women choose the abortion pill because they think it will be more natural and less invasive than surgical abortion. However, studies show the rate of complications from medical/chemical abortions is four times higher than that of surgical abortions. 1 in 12 women bleed for more than 30 days and 1 in 100 women need to be hospitalised.

Note: Other names for the Abortion Pill are “medical abortion” and “chemical abortion”.

Even if you have decided to go forward with the abortion pill process, there are still several steps you should take beforehand.

Can I just take the abortion pill?

Having an ultrasound scan is the vital first step in determining whether you qualify for the abortion pill, and the best step to protecting your women’s health.

An early ultrasound confirms three important factors:

Firstly, an ultrasound checks your pregnancy is located in the uterus and confirms it is not an ectopic pregnancy (located in the fallopian tube). This can pose serious risks if undiscovered.

Secondly, a scan checks the viability of your pregnancy. A non-viable pregnancy will end naturally with miscarriage, and therefore, the abortion pill would be unnecessary. Depending on the gestation of your pregnancy, you may be referred for surgical miscarriage management.

Thirdly, an ultrasound checks for the gestational age of your baby, or how many weeks pregnant you are. Dating a pregnancy by your last bleed is not always accurate, as there can be other reasons why women bleed that are unrelated to menstruation. An ultrasound is a much more accurate indicator of gestational age. This will determine whether you qualify for the abortion pill.
